This PCORI Funding Announcement seeks to fund high-impact, patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) projects led by researcher and community partnerships to focus on advancing care and outcomes across different phases of the cancer care continuum. Proposed CER projects should inform health decisions for patients, caregivers and communities in the United States experiencing high burdens and practice variations in cancer care and outcomes. Research Initiative Highlights

Approximately 40% of people in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetimes. Advances in early detection and cancer treatments have resulted in an increased ability to identify and treat individuals affected by cancer. Despite such advances, cancer and its treatments continue to have both short- and long-term physical, emotional, social, and financial impacts on the lives of patients and their caregivers. Furthermore, specific subgroups of the U.S. population bear a greater burden of cancer. Variations in cancer care and outcomes exist due to several factors, including geography, age, income, and stage of illness. These variations exist throughout the entire cancer continuum, spanning prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and palliative and end-of-life care.
