This PCORI Funding Announcement (PFA), Improving Health Decision Making with Comparative Clinical Effectiveness Research in Cancer, Pain, Substance Use, Maternal Morbidity and Mortality, Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Sensory Health, Metabolic and Endocrine Health, Mental and Behavioral Health and Rare Diseases: Retrospective Observational Studies Leveraging Existing Data Sources, seeks to fund well-designed, methodologically robust retrospective observational patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) studies that will produce timely, impactful and patient-centered results to inform healthcare decision making and improve health outcomes. Research Initiative Highlights

Retrospective observational studies can provide valuable data to address important questions for patients through timely evaluations of interventions in real-world settings. Studies leveraging established data sources can have meaningful roles in evaluating patient outcomes, as they allow for large and representative populations and provide an important complement to randomized controlled trials (RCTs) when RCTs are not practical or ethically acceptable. They also permit the study of clinical outcomes over a period of time longer than is typically feasible during the conduct of a clinical trial, allowing for observation of long-term impacts and unintended adverse events.
